When do grains of sand become a pile?

This is one of my favorite dilemmas.

Take a grain of sand. Is that a pile? Probably not. Add another grain of sand. Is that a pile? Maybe, but I’d call it a couple. Keep adding grains of sand until you feel like you’ve moved from grains of sand to a pile.

When is it?

Depends upon the definition of pile being used, no? According to one simple definition, a pile is made when objects are stacked upon each other; so if you're skillful enough to stack a grain of sand upon another, that could be a pile. Maybe you need three as a base to have one stacked on top, all pyramid-like, in a pile.
